I have not been writing in here because tumblr and my blog for slimcinema are way more exciting to play with, and when I'm all through having fun with them, I lack the right amount of energy to say anything exciting here. If anybody cares about me they should start checking those sites. I still plan on using livejournal (I check my friends list everyday), but probably only to update about something I want everybody to know about and in that case it will just be a link to my tumblr or blog. |

Subject: Save NPR and PBS (again)
Hi,
Everyone expected House Republicans to give up efforts to kill NPR and PBS after a massive public outcry stopped them last year. But they've just voted to eliminate funding for NPR and PBS—unbelievably, starting with programs like "Sesame Street."
Public broadcasting would lose nearly a quarter of its federal funding this year. Even worse, all funding would be eliminated in two years--threatening one of the last remaining sources of watchdog journalism.
Sign the petition telling Congress to save NPR and PBS again this year:
http://civic.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/
Last year, millions of us took action to save NPR and PBS, and Congress listened. We can do it again if enough of us sign the petition in time.
This would be the most severe cut in the history of public broadcasting. The Boston Globe reports the cuts "could force the elimination of some popular PBS and NPR programs." NPR's president expects rural public radio stations may be forced to shut down.
The House and Senate are deciding if public broadcasting will survive, and they need to hear from viewers like you. Sign the petition at:
http://civic.moveon.org/publicbroadcasting/
Thanks!
P.S. Read the Boston Globe story on the threat to NPR and PBS at:

It has been a terribly long while since I have last updated my LiveJournal, partially due to a brief stay in Russia in which I was taken captive by former USSR officials. Luckily, escape was made easy upon the enlistment of Mr. Hawke, who in a covert operation barely managed to save my life. Unfortunately, Hawke was not as lucky as I, and fell victim to a bomb in a warehouse in which I was a hostage. Upon my leave of Russia I chanced upon several Ukrainian babes who voyaged with me to Paris, where we drank quite a lot of wine and attended viewings of exceptional film at the cinematheque. However, one of the USSR officers had followed me to Paris and I was forced to flee on a shipliner destined for America. I arrived at a port in New York, disheveled and disoriented, attempting to find myself via coffee shops, pretentious video rental places, and beautiful women who did not care for Seinfeld. As this did not work, I returned to my home of Tucson, from where I am writing this now. I've discovered that I dislike answering my telephone and also find leaving my bedroom a difficult challenge, much to the dismay of my friends, however am preoccupied with Casa Video and Netflix as sources for cinema. Additionally, my friends -- ahem, Alex -- often make fun of my inability to return their calls in a prompt manner, and even for my failure to show up to gatherings when I say I will (thirty minutes really means two hours!). But, after such a grueling six months -- being tortured in Russia, drunken Parisian sex, wandering in New York -- honestly, who can blame me?
Fortunately, Christine thinks I am quite a dashing gentleman and will attempt to rehabilitate my social life, although probably not very well because she tends to prefer movies over people also. But at the very least, effort shall be put forth. |

valentines day is probably my favorite holiday, and i feel bad for anybody who actually has to share this wonderful day with someone. for me, valentines day is where you snuggle up in your sheets, tell everyone around you that you are really depressed cause you don't have a valentine, and then purchase lost episodes off itunes all day long with no interruptions. |

end of year movie wrap up after i've been drinking gin and tonic out of a philadelphia flyers pint glass:
where to start? cinema reached an even lower point this year than last. i enjoyed 'a history of violence' and maybe want to say i think it's the best film of the year...but that will just depress me. and i admit there are a ton i have yet to see and being in the middle of pottstown, pennsylavania it is hurting my ability to see the new haneke film and others like brokeback, but i'm fairly confident either of those films will make me less depressed for the state of cinema in '05. 'grizzly man' of course was excellent, but thats no surprise. 'me you and every we know' was a little pretentious but i saw a new formula i liked. i guess i'm really bummed because this year i got more entertainment out of the mainstream directors than the avantgarde or indie. i feel really let down by these young indie filmmakers who we gave fame and now there giving us shit. SOMEONES NOT DOING THEIR JOB. the indie of now is turning into the mainstream. no surprise it happens all the time and i'm not complaining. that's fine with me, thats going to let in room for more exciting cinema formulas. it's a sad time right now nonetheless, but that all will change. just go here for the proof:
SLIMCINEMA
i'm in the process of trying to make it all better.
and since i didn't make a list this holiday of theatrical events, here are just the best cinema events:
-seeing 'sans soleil' by chris marker for the first time. now thats cinema!
-seeing 'two or three things i know about her' for the first time.
-'rabbits' by daivd lynch for the first time.
-'tout van bien' and 'week end' finally fucking being released on dvd in my lifetime.
-experiencing hitchcock in san francisco and having my TM teacher drive me to the cemetery from 'vertigo'.
-the francois truffaut films i watched this year that kept me sane.
-reading 'my last sigh' by bunuel.
-werner herzog's excellent work ethic.
-the castro theater in san francisco.
-the film forum in manhattan.
-david cronenberg's excellent sex scenes.
-and the winner...seeing '2001: a space odyssey' at the paris theater in manhattan!!!
merry christmas and happy new year!
p.s. when i see terrence malick's new film, which was just released yesterday and everybody should go fucking see it cause that man is a god even if hes not as nice to his fans as herzog (i.e. work ethic), that will be on my list as well. |
